Texas coach Mack Brown confirmed Monday that freshman kickoff returner/receiver D.J. Monroe is no longer suspended and will return to the team for the BCS National Championship game against Alabama Jan. 7.There had been speculation Monroe might return after his DWI charge in Austin was dismissed late last week. Monroe agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor obstruction of a passageway charge instead.
Brown told reporters Monday that he made his decision to allow Monroe to return from an indefinite suspension after missing three games following a long conversation Sunday. Monroe had been arrested Nov. 15 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and was immediately suspended for the Longhorns' final three games of the season.
His return could be significant in two ways: It returns the Texas Longhorns fastest football player to the field and it also will allow senior Jordan Shipley to focus primarily on receiver and punt returning. Shipley had added kickoff returns to his duties with limited success in Monroe's absence.
