The NFC East-leading Eagles, winners of five straight, are expecting to get a boost on offense Sunday when Denver visits. Philadelphia coach Andy Reid said at his Wednesday press conference that running back Brian Westbrook has been cleared to return after missing five games due to post-concussion symptoms. "Unless there's a setback, I think that's what he's counting on, the doctors and everybody else," said Reid, who added that Westbrook did "perfect" on medical tests this week.
Westbrook suffered a concussion in Week 7 at Washington, missed two games, then returned in Week 10 and suffered a second concussion against the Chagers. He has not played since.
The Eagles haven't missed a step with Westbrook out, however -- they are 6-1 in games he's missed. Rookie LeSean McCoy's picked up the slack admirably with 601 yards rushing and 37 receptions.
Still, Philadelphia will gladly welcome the veteran Westbrook back to the fold.
"He's a great player," Reid said. "He's one of the smartest players I've ever coached. He brings leadership out there."
Westbrook will likely ease back into the lineup Sunday when Philadelphia hosts Denver. The Eagles (10-4) are closing in on an NFC East crown and are still alive for a No. 2 seed in the playoffs, just one game back on Minnesota. Denver, on the other hand, finds itself on the verge of falling out of the postseason picture after a stunning home loss to Oakland last Sunday.
The Eagles will still be without rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin this week. Maclin suffered a foot injury during a Week 14 win over the Giants and sat out the Eagles' Week 15 victory over San Francisco.
It's a bit scary to think about Philadelphia's offensive potential once everyone's healthy -- the Eagles have averaged 31.4 points per game during their five-game win streak, with Donovan McNabb exceling and Michael Vick making more of an impact. Turning their ground game back into the McCoy-Westbrook dual threat should only increase Philadelphia's potential.
