Gay Marriage Vote Puts Heat On Christie
Update: Roland underwent surgery for a broken fibula and tibia this morning. FanHouse Big 12 writer Terrance Harris spoke to coach Mark Turgeon Wednesday morning for an update.Cameras didn't catch exactly how Texas A&M guard Derrick Roland injured himself in Tuesday night's loss against Washington, but that might've been just as well. Those that did see it had to look away.
The Aggie senior landed awkwardly and seemed to break his right leg above the ankle in a gruesome manner. An Everett Herald reporter at courtside categorized the traumatic injury as a "compound fracture to his lower right leg."
How the injury happened remains unclear -- Roland leapt and crashed hard to the ground -- but its effect wasn't. The Texas A&M bench immediately looked into the crowd, and when they did look back on the court they did so with looks of anguish and sadness, some with their jerseys pulled up around their eyes. Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon ran on the court while action moved to the Huskies' end of the court. Trainers from both staffs flooded the court and encircled the supine Roland, who lay diagonally across the lane, with his arms over his eyes.
The game was delayed about 10 minutes while trainers waited on a paramedics crew.
Roland did not get up and was lifted onto a gurney and carted off the court with his right leg in an air cast, though he did give fist bumps to his teammates as he was rolled off.
Roland is now in stable condition at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center.
The gruesome nature of the injury likely means his season is over.
Roland, the team's second-leading scorer and one of its best defenders, was averaging 11.1 points and 1.7 assists per game this season entering Tuesday night's contest. He had four points and an assist against the Huskies.
Washington pulled away for a 73-64 win after the delay. The Huskies led 34-33 when Roland went down.
The Aggies' next game is Saturday, Jan. 2 against Northwestern State and begin Big 12 play Jan. 9 against Nebraska.
