NBA star Ron Artest is a big boxing fan and now he's blogging about the sport, right here at FanHouse. In this post Ron shares his thoughts on boxing star Jermain Taylor. Artest: I remember I would be in the locker room with Corliss Williamson and he was high on this one boxer from Arkansas, Jermain Taylor. I knew who the boxer was from a while back because I watched him come up and build his celebrity, along with building up his wins. I wasn't into his style after the first couple fights because it seemed a little weird, but I also didn't think he would lose fights the way he lost them. For a guy as athletic as he is, his head never moves, and defensively his body acts as if it is nervous of every punch being thrown his way.
I really do believe if Jermain Taylor relaxes a little on defense and tries to anticipate the punches coming, it could help his counter attack. It seems as if his core and legs are weak and lack mobility. Look at the new heavyweight boxing genius Kevin Johnson -- his body and head movement are almost as good as Money Mayweather's. I still don't understand why Johnson doesn't punch, but that is another story ...
I think Jermain Taylor needs to work on defense and on holding when sparring. I just believe when he is in the gym, that's what is missing from his arsenal and training program. His offense also needs work. I believe if he continues to throw wild punches -- always having to cock his arms all the way back -- instead of more straight rights and lefts from the shoulders, he will continue to get hit.
I could be wrong but this is what I see from the potential redemption fighter.
