Former U.S. Olympian Vanes Martirosyan, a junior middleweight (154 pounds) from Glendale Calif., will face his biggest test when he meets Ugandan-born, former world champion, southpaw, Kassim Ouma, in a 10-round, non-title bout on Jan. 16 in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

A 23-year-old who was born in Abovyan, Armenia, Martirosyan scored his third, consecutive knockout on Dec. 19, when he dethroned southpaw, NABF champion, Willie Lee, of New Orleans, with a third-round stoppage that also earned him the WBO's NABO crown.

Martirosyan-Lee took place on the undercard of Kelly Pavlik's fourth-round knockout of Miguel Espino in defense of his WBC and WBO middleweight (160 pounds) titles in Youngstown, Ohio.

Nicknamed, "The Nightmare," Martirosyan (26-0, 17 knockouts) is guided by three-time Trainer Of The Year, Freddie Roach, who also handles seven-division champion and WBO welterweight (147 pound) titlist, Manny Pacquiao, as well as WBA light welterweight (140 pounds) king, Amir Khan.

The 31-year-old Ouma (26-6-1, 16 KOs), of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., has lost four of his past five fights, including April's 10th-round split decision to Gabriel Rosado.

"Vanes Matirorsyan looked great on our last card, Dec. 19, and he's going to open up our Fox Boxing series on Jan 16 against Kasim Ouma at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas," said Top Rank promoter, Bob Arum of the bout, which will be the main event of his company's debut of a 36-show, boxing series with Fox Sports and Fox Sports en Espanol.

A victory over Ouma, said Arum, could lead to a world title bout against "any of the champions in that weight class," including Cory Spinks, Yuri Foreman, or, Sergiy Dzinziruk, of the IBF, WBA, and, WBO, respectively.

"I think that he's ready for those guys," said Arum. "Vanes will be the main event, and he's ready to go."
