The Titans' slim playoff hopes were finished off by their loss to the Chargers, so that leaves the Titans' one main goal for their season finale -- get Chris Johnson to 2,000 yards. The NFL's leading rusher has already wrapped up the rushing title -- he leads Steven Jackson by more than 500 yards. He's already set a Titans' record for single game rushing yards (an impressive feat considering Earl Campbell had five 200-plus yard games himself) and has become the league's best big-play threat, a running back who can turn any simple toss sweep into an 80-yard touchdown. Now he's trying to become the sixth player in NFL history to reach 2,000 yards. He needs 128 yards against the Seahawks to reach the feat. That's right at his average per game this year (124 yards per game), so it should be within his sights. His chances of reaching Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record of 2,105 is much, much less likely as he'd need a career-best 233 yards against the Seahawks. Even with the Titans aiming to get him 2,000 yards, it's unlikely he'll get enough carries and break enough big runs to come close to threatening Dickerson's mark.
But it's almost a slam dunk that Johnson will break a less-noticed but equally impressive record: Johnson only needs 74 yards to break Marshall Faulk's record for yards from scrimmage in a single season. Johnson currently has 2,355 while Faulk had 2,429.
It hasn't been the year Titans fans have expected, but watching Johnson run almost makes up for that. There's no guarantee that Johnson will ever have another year that comes close to matching this one -- Adrian Peterson is still trying to equal his rookie season heroics, but every week Titans fans have gotten a chance to watch greatness.
