Albert HaynesworthLess than a year into his seven-year free agent deal, Albert Haynesworth is already completely frustrated with the Redskins' scheme, its coaching staff and his role in the defense.

It's safe to say that Haynesworth won't have to worry about playing for this coaching staff next year, but there's no guarantee that Haynesworth will be any happier playing for Mike Shanahan or whoever else coaches the Redskins.

Haynesworth's unhappiness is a reminder that free agency isn't always a win-win for the player or the team. NFL players would often be better off staying in the situation they know rather than leaving for more money elsewhere. The Titans' offer to Haynesworth wasn't close to what Haynesworth could make in Washington, but it still would have been enough to ensure that Haynesworth's kids and grandkids would be well taken care of.

And by staying in Tennessee, Haynesworth would have played for a coaching staff that built the defense around him, playing with teammates who he knew and generally respected and in a town that viewed him as a star. By signing the richest contract in NFL history for a defensive linemen, Haynesworth all of a sudden faced massive expectations as well as a coaching staff that was starting from scratch. In Tennessee, a bad game or one of Haynesworth's frequent injuries would be a minor blip on the radar, because he built a lot of good will in Tennessee with his play as a Titan. In Washington, nothing Haynesworth's done before signing with the Redskins really matters, so the margin of error to maintain a positive public perception is small.

Haynesworth still has six years to go on this contract but, one year in, it's a contract that seems to be a big mistake for everyone involved. With Haynesworth, Tennessee would probably be a playoff team. But his presence has done nothing to help Washington, which could have gone 4-10 without him and the massive money devoted to him.
