One of the two big shoes on the free-agent market has apparently dropped, with multiple reports that the Mets have agreed to terms with Jason Bay, pending a physical. A source told FanHouse's Ed Price that there are still details of the deal to be settled, but the physical is expected to be on Monday.

That leaves Matt Holliday as the only true impact hitter left on the free agent market, and now that Bay is done there will be a firm contract out there for agent Scott Boras to use as a starting point for Holliday.

It's a four-year, $66-million deal, according to the New York Daily News. That's roughly what the Mets offered Bay at the winter meetings. This deal does reportedly have a vesting option for a fifth year.

Bay, 31, hit .267 with 36 homers and 119 RBIs last year with the Red Sox. Going to the National League could help him, but going to Citi Field from Fenway Park certainly will not.

How much will Bay help the Mets? He'll help their offense, but the Mets' larger issue last year was a pitching staff that ranked 12th in the league, despite playing in a pitcher-friendly ballpark.
