Wade PhillipsARLINGTON, Texas -- Last week, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave perpetually embattled head coach Wade Phillips a vote of confidence following an inspiring two-game winning streak that ensured his team would make the playoffs.

Yet there is nothing quite safe about Phillips' place in Dallas, or so it seems. That's why the coach's job security was again a topic following Sunday's 24-0 shutout over the Philadelphia Eagles -- a victory that gave the Cowboys the NFC East crown and a first-round home game next Saturday against the same division foe.

Until Jones gives Phillips an contract extension, the questions will not end. And Jones was typically ambiguous Sunday when asked to update his coach's employment status, which to date includes only an option year for 2010.

Will an extension be based on a successful playoff run?

"What's it going to be?" Jones asked rhetorically. "It's really an uptick feeling. I really don't know how you can sit here and make a change with the winningest-percentage coach that we've had in the history of the Cowboys.

"I'm being a little 'Wade Phillips' over here, but the facts are that it's always been about our uptick. It's always been about our edge and we know that ultimately there's a swoon if you miss out at a game in the playoffs and go home. But at this particular time, he's looking good."
