They seemed to have it firmly in grasp for the past few weeks, but Sunday it became official: The St. Louis Rams will have the first overall draft pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Rams "clinched" the worst record in the NFL Sunday when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 28-6. While the score is lopsided, the game was in doubt for much of the afternoon. The Rams actually held a 3-0 lead at halftime and trailed by only one (7-6) after a fourth-quarter field goal by Rams kicker Josh Brown.
The Niners must have gotten tired of toying around with what would have been a dubious loss, however, because they scored 21 points in the last seven and a half minutes. Vernon Davis caught a 73-yard touchdown strike from Alex Smith and Frank Gore twice punched it in from inside the 10 for touchdowns.
Most speculation has the obvious top player available being Ndamukong Suh, the hulking defensive tackle from Nebraska who terrorized opposing offensive linemen all season for the Cornhuskers.
Suh would fit nicely on a young defense with several quality parts. Defensive end Chris Long and middle linebacker James Laurinaitis were high draft picks in recent years and the Rams have quality elsewhere in Leonard Little, James Butler and O.J. Atogwe. The addition of Suh and the second year of head coach/defensive guru Steve Spagnuolo would be a huge step toward fielding a respectable defense.
Of course, there are two sides of the football. The Rams have one of the best running backs in football in Steven Jackson. They have a solid base to the offensive line with Jason Brown and Jason Smith, too, but they don't have a quarterback. Do they try to squeeze another year out of Marc Bulger? Do they try to find someone via free agency? Do they go with Kyle Boller or Keith Null? None of those options seem really promising, but there aren't any quarterbacks in the upcoming draft who are the caliber of the top overall pick (and the money the Rams would be forced to shell out).
So, yeah, it seems like Suh is the route to go. The Rams could take a quarterback in the second round. After all, Drew Brees was once a second-rounder.
