As reported by John McClain in the Houston Chronicle, Texans owner Bob McNair said that head coach Gary Kubiak definitely will return to coach in 2010 -- the final year on his current contract. McClain noted that Kubiak may end up getting an extension, and that decision will be made at the end of the month.Though there was much speculation about Kubiak's job, those who follow the Texans closely knew that McNair would keep Kubiak unless there the team suffered a complete collapse this season. McNair likes and respect Kubiak -- Houston's owner has expressed on numerous occasions his deep appreciation for the way that the Steelers conduct their business, and in an effort to follow that model, doesn't want to be a meddling owner that changes coaches and philosophies every few years.
Of course, that works if you have the right football people building your organization, and there's been a bit of debate on that point.
Since 2006, it appears that the Texans model is to acquire system players for offense, and as many bad, bad men as possible on the other side of the ball until the defense is credible. The 4-3 is all about talent, and they are trying to develop new young players each year. They've relied on make-do players at a lot of positions, while they try to fix basic problems. They pretty much built this team from scratch as there were few holdovers from the Charley Casserly-built Texans worth keeping. "Andre Johnson, party of 1, Andre Johnson, party of 1."
Before the season, it was a long shot for the Texans to make the playoffs, given the youth of their team at just about every position and the lack of continuity on defense. At the beginning of the season, they had the youngest starting offense and defense in the league, with very few players in the primes of their careers at their positions.
McNair believes that this young team is going in a positive direction and doesn't think that a new coach would get them to the playoffs and beyond any faster. During the Bengals-Jets broadcast Sunday night , Texans quarterback Matt Schaub commented by phone on the Texans' coaching, saying that everyone in the locker room supported Kubiak and wanted him to return. He and his teammates are getting their wish, and if I were to guess, Kubiak will get an extension as well.
