Chris CheliosFormer longtime NHL defenseman Chris Chelios was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in suburban Chicago last week, according to a statement released by the Westmont Police Department on Tuesday.

"An officer observed (Chelios) make an illegal lane change and speeding," Westmont Police Sgt. Jim Gunther told FanHouse. "He was arrested for DUI after the officer observed he was also intoxicated."

Gunther declined to release Chelios' blood alcohol level or how the police determined he was over the legal limit before he was arrested at 4:12 a.m. on Dec. 28. Chelios was the only person in vehicle at the time of the traffic stop.

According to the news release, Chelios was transported to the Westmont Police station where he was charged and released after he posted a $300 bond. Chelios was assigned a Feb. 1 court date.

Chelios, who turns 48 later this month, played in more NHL games than any other U.S.-born player (1,644) in a career that began in Montreal in 1983-84 season. After playing only 28 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season and failing to sign with another NHL club, Chelios has spent this season playing with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.

Chelios was in the lineup for the Wolves in the team's 6-4 loss Rockford on Dec. 27 and he's been in the lineup for the three subsequent games.

"We have no comment on this personal issue," Wolves spokeswoman Elizabeth Casey said Tuesday night in an e-mail.
