ESPN Must Push BCS to Adopt Playoffs

PASADENA, Calif. -- The most important press conference wasn't for Texas coach Mack Brown, who just received a raise to an inane $5.1 million -- about 50 times more than your average tenured professor -- despite almost blowing the Big 12 title game with horrendous clock mismanagement. Nor was it for Alabama coach Nick Saban, the Crimson Snide, who was asked if he was having fun, repeated the question with a disgusted sneer, then wondered why someone else suggested that his voice was hoarse.

"Is anybody having trouble understanding me?" Saban shot back. "Just trying to project a positive image. It's something called allergies, you know?"

No, the most important press conference at any Bowl Championship Series title game is one in which an ESPN executive shows up. In my mind, the only hope of revamping the most mindless, short-sighted and ill-conceived creation in the history of sports -- college football's current bowl system -- is if the biggest entity in sports broadcasting takes advantage of its new four-year relationship with the BCS and does the following:
