We get to know NHL players with some quick questions. Today, we meet Tampa Bay sophomore sensation Steven Stamkos. What are your first hockey memories?
I can still remember some of my first times skating out on the pond and at the local rinks in Markham, Ontario. I would use a chair to help me with balance. The stick and puck came a little later, but I was getting ready.
What's the best part of being in the NHL?
Playing the game you love and making an incredible living doing it. I never think of this as a job and I doubt I ever will.
What's the toughest aspect of playing in the NHL?
Just being on the road for two weeks at a time, like we do a few times each season. But even with the trips, there are positives: more time around the guys, getting to visit great places. Really the only downside to the travel is the toll the back-to-back games can take on your body. Other than that, you're not going to hear me compain about life in the NHL.
I take a two-hour pre-game nap from 2-4 pm. My roommate, Matt Walker, only sleeps for an hour so I have to thank him for being so courteous. He wakes up. but I don't hear a thing. I also put on my equipment left-side first. Don't ask me why. Makes no sense, I know.
If you could lay a big, clean hit on anyone in the league, who would it be?
Ryan Wilson with the Avalanche. He was my captain in junior with Sarnia (OHL) and he hits hard. Would be nice to turn the tables on him.
Which teammate of yours would you like to be for one day?
Ryan Malone. It would be interesting to see what it's like having all those tattoos -- if only for one day.
