Colt McCoy Knocked Out of National Championship Game

Colt McCoyTexas' title hopes took a heavy hit on the Longhorns' first offensive series. Quarterback Colt McCoy left the game after the fifth play, when he was brought down by Alabama's Marcell Dareus and suffered a right shoulder injury.

He did not return.

After the game, McCoy told ABC's Lisa Salters he couldn't feel his arm after the tackle.

"I really have no pain in my arm, I just can't feel my arm," McCoy said. "It wasn't a painful hit. I've taken that hit over and over.

"It's like I slept on my arm and woke up and it's dead."

Following the hit, McCoy was taken to the X-ray room at the Rose Bowl. Initial results were negative, likely indicating McCoy suffered a sprain. The Texas quarterback was shown repeatedly on the ABC broadcast walking without his pads on, but he did return to the Longhorn sideline wearing his shoulder pads in the second half.

McCoy was 2 of 2 for nine yards when he was injured.

Freshman Garrett Gilbert took over for Texas and struggled early against Alabama. Gilbert completed just one-of-10 passes for minus-four yards in the first half and threw an interception to -- ironically -- Dareus, who returned the shovel pass for a touchdown seconds before halftime.

However, Gilbert rebounded in the second half to throw for two touchdowns to Jordan Shipley, including a 28-yarder that helped pull Texas within three points of Alabama.

Alabama went on to win 37-21.

It was an anticlimactic farewell for McCoy, who set the all-time wins record for quarterbacks during his career. McCoy choked up during his postgame interview as he said goodbye to college football like man working over the words of his own eulogy.

"It's unfortunate I didn't get to play," McCoy said. "I would've given everything I have to get out there and play with my team. But I don't question why things happen way they do."

McCoy leaves as one of college football's most prolific quarterbacks, if not a national champion. McCoy threw for 3,512 yards and 27 touchdowns this season and 13,244 yards and 112 touchdowns in his career. He finished in the top three in Heisman voting each of the past three years.
