In his first NHL game in over a year, Rick DiPietro lost a 4-3 decision in Dallas on Friday night. The Islanders goalie stopped 24 of 28 shots, with a juicy rebound setting up Brad Richards' goal to give the Stars a 4-3 lead at 16:37 of the second period DiPietro's one obvious faux pas of the evening.
"It was a great first game for him," said Islanders coach Scott Gordon. "Considering where he's come from, he made some big saves when we needed them. For a first game, we'll take it."
Making his first start since last January 2, DiPietro did not allow allow any embarrassing goals and did not make any spectacular saves. As he is famous for, the 28-year-old goalie played the puck too much, although it was apparent he tried to play a more cautious game. On Josh Bailey's goal to tie the game, 1-1, at 7:16 of the first, DiPietro was credited with an assist when he slid the puck to Trent Hunter at center ice.
Dallas also got goals from Toby Peterson, Loui Eriksson and Brenden Morrow. The Islanders' other goals were by Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen. Marty Turco made 19 saves in the win for Dallas.
By starting DiPietro after four conditioning stints in the minors over the hot hand of Dwayne Roloson, the Islanders sacrificed their best chance to win in order to see what the former all-star and U.S. Olympian could do. The 40-year-old Roloson, who is 16-7-6 for an Islanders team that is now one game below .500, will likely start on Saturday in Phoenix and when the Islanders return home to face Detroit on Tuesday.
How DiPietro feels Saturday is the next big story in his comeback. As he said before the game, he has "put in a lot of long days and long nights" in his quest to return to his status as the Islanders' No. 1 goalie. Right now, the Islanders do not need him to be a No. 1 -- just to maintain his health and to get stronger with each game.
"Rick's play is going to be at a different level a month from now," said Gordon.
