Sunday afternoon, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco had possibly the worst individual performance -- from a statistical standpoint -- of a signal-caller in a winning playoff effort. Flacco completed just four of his 10 pass attempts, one of which was for negative yardage, for a total of 34 yards. With no touchdown passes and an interception being factored in and you get a quarterback rating of 10.0. Of course, the Ravens didn't need him to put up passing numbers. They ran the ball 52 times for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Ray Rice went 83 yards on the first play from scrimmage to set the tone and the defense picked Tom Brady off three times and also grabbed a fumble from him.
Thus, you have a team win a road playoff game 33-14 with a quarterback who passed for less yards than his running back gained on the first play of the game. That old adage about running and defense winning in January definitely rang true in Foxboro Sunday.
The Ravens are now 3-1 in Flacco's four career playoff starts. He's also been the quarterback of a playoff team for his first two seasons in the league, which is an incredibly rare feat.
The Ravens will look to continue their winning ways next week in Indianapolis against the 14-2 Colts. Flacco may need to have a better statistical day to keep up with Peyton Manning. Then again, the Ravens can run on anyone and the defense did just shut down Tom Brady. Stay tuned.
