New Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville promised to keep the aerial attack that Mike Leach brought or something very close.

He has apparently settled on the latter.

It appears Tuberville has gone outside of the current staff to bring in Troy offensive coordinator Neal Brown to fill that same role with the Red Raiders, according to sources on both sides. Tuberville met with Brown on Monday at the Football Coaches Association Convention. An agreement was reached Tuesday that will bring the 29-year-old Brown, the youngest Football Bowl Subdivision offensive coordinator, from the Sun Belt Conference to the much more challenging Big 12.

Inside receivers coach Lincoln Riley was a candidate to run the offense after filling in as the offensive coordinator during Texas Tech's Alamo Bowl win over Michigan State. Leach served as the offensive coordinator during his 10-year stint.

But Brown probably fits more into the mold of what the defensive-oriented Tuberville likes in an offense. Sure, he will keep the pass-first oriented offense because that is what the Red Raiders fans have come to enjoy and expect, but Tuberville wants to see a little more ground control running game incorporated into the mix.

Brown, who just completed his second season as the Trojans' offensive coordinator, ran an offense that ranked third in the nation in yards per game this season with a 485.7 yards per game average.

There still has been no word on whether Ruffin McNeill, who served as the Raiders interim head coaching during the bowl game and was a candidate for the head coaching job, will be retained as the defensive coordinator. Tuberville didn't reveal his plan but said he would conduct a search during the coaches' convention for the best candidate.

Tuberville planned to meet with the current Tech staff a couple times during the convention before heading back to Lubbock to meet with his new team for the first time Wednesday afternoon.
