USC and new coach Lane Kiffin's courtship of Norm Chow ends with Chow remaining in Westwood. Several days of speculation ended in a whimper, with UCLA's athletics website hailing Chow's decision to remain on Rick Neuheisel's Bruin coaching staff.Chow's rejection of Troy is a gut punch to a program in desperate need of capable offensive leadership, and it has the added sting of Chow siding with the crosstown rivals.
At this stage there's very little public indication of where USC will redirect its search for an offensive coordinator. In a pinch Kiffin can take on those duties but ideally the Trojans will find a fulltime coordinator. Let the speculation begin as to why this didn't work out. USC almost certainly had the money to lure Chow away but perhaps was not offering enough control or maybe he and Kiffin could not quite get on the same page, similar to their occasional feuding in 2004.
Whatever the cause, the outcome is a major surprise. Chow turns his back on an incredible wealth of talent to return to UCLA's shaky offensive line and young quarterbacks.
Is the football monopoly in Los Angeles officially over? Probably not as USC has the talent to regain some of its powerhouse status but the Chow rejection will certainly help close the gap between the two programs.
