Job Satisfaction Keeps Falling

Even at a time when many workers consider themselves lucky to be employed at all, a poll shows Americans' job satisfaction is the lowest on record. Only 45 percent of U.S. workers are satisfied with their jobs, according to the latest survey done for The Conference Board. That is the lowest level since the business research group started asking the question in 1987.

Increased unhappiness at work is not just a reflection of the current recession. It is "a long-term trend that should be a red flag to employers," warned a Conference Board report this month.

"Through both economic boom and bust during the past two decades, our job satisfaction numbers have shown a consistent downward trend," said Lynn Franco, director of the group's Consumer Research Center.

One reason for the steady decline, the research found, is that fewer workers consider their jobs interesting. Many also complained that their incomes weren't keeping up with inflation and the rising cost of health insurance.
