Mayor's Message: Lay Off the Salt

(Jan. 15) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a crusader for healthy eating. He has banned transfats in restaurant meals and forced chain restaurants to post calorie counts on menus. His latest target: salt consumption.

Bloomberg, a self-professed salt lover, announced Jan. 11 that he wants manufacturers to slash the sodium in a slew of products ranging from peanut butter (20 percent) to breakfast cereals (40 percent). The program is voluntary.

Americans eat double the amount of salt that they should, health officials say. Salt consumption can lead to high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks.
