So much for homophonic resurrection in New Jersey for Shawne Williams. The Nets today waived the embattled swingman, just recently acquired from Dallas in some goofy cap maneuvering. When New Jersey picked up Shawne, it simultaneously waived its own resident problem child Sean Williams, who just last spring was arrested after some mall hijinks. The newest ex-Net (that'd be Shawne, keep up!) faces handcuffs of his own. Williams has been indicted on multiple counts of drug possession and conspiracy to manufacture, deliver or sell controlled substances by a Tennesse grand jury, according to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal. The conspiracy to manufacture, deliver or sell charges are tied to the alleged possession of some codeine-based syrup, a concoction made famous (in part) by a 2000 song by Memphis hip hop group Three 6 Mafia. Williams grew up in Memphis, and briefly attended the University of Memphis before being drafted by the Pacers in 2006.
Williams' indictment follows from a massive Memphis Police Department investigation called "Operation Lockdown," which according to the Commercial-Appeal has netted 24 defendants.
Two NFL players have been busted for possession of syrup: former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel and current Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly. Jolly faces drug charges in Houston after an arrest for possession of syrup. Kiel lost his NFL job in 2007 while facing drug charges. (DEA agents actually arrested him in the Chargers' locker room.) He later plead guilty to drug charges to avoid a prison sentence, but was killed in a single-car crash in San Diego in 2008. Both Jolly and Kiel have ties to Houston, which is considered -- along with Memphis -- to be a syrup hot spot.
Codeine is on the NBA's list of drugs for which testing positive leads to league banishment. Current Nugget Chris Andersen was booted from the league in 2006 for testing positive for one of those drugs. One imagines being convicted of felony possession for one of them could also lead to banishment, though that's not exactly a problem the untouchable Williams should worry about.
