Tiger Woods could finally be generating some positive conversation. As relief efforts for earthquake victims in Haiti build, the Tiger Woods Foundation is indicating a commitment to major involvement.
"We have been evaluating the most appropriate role for the Tiger Woods Foundation in assisting the people of Haiti," said Greg McLaughlin, President & CEO of the Tiger Woods Foundation. "Our plan is to be part of the relief effort to help rebuild Haiti by supporting organizations that provide critical resources to young people, which is consistent with our mission and previous efforts regarding Hurricane Rita, Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 tsunami."
A possible Woods involvement in the relief effort was first mentioned by rap icon Russell Simmons, who told the New York Daily News that Woods was considering a $3 million pledge that would send doctors and supplies to Haiti. Simmons suggested on Wednesday that Woods was "working on sending a mobile hospital with 50 EMTs to go set up a triage."
Simmons was scheduled to meet with Woods representatives on Thursday.
As of Friday, Woods representatives said they had yet received information from Simmons, but did confirm an interest in assisting in the relief efforts.
Woods, of course, has been taking a public relations beating since a secret-life sex scandal began to unfold in late November.
He has not been seen or heard from since, except for early statements released on his web site.
The Tiger Woods Foundation's has primarily worked for children's causes. Programs like the Tiger Woods Learning Center, Tiger's Action Plan and TWF Grants and Youth Clinics, have been aimed at helping children and teens.
The Foundation has also raised and dispersed more than $30 million toward communities nationwide through grants, scholarships and the Tiger Woods Learning Center.
