Stanford tailback and 2009 Heisman Trophy runner-up Toby Gerhart made it official Friday, declaring for the NFL draft. The burly powerback leaves on a high note having rushed for almost 1,900 yards while leading the country in touchdowns. That effort propelled perennial feast-or-famine program Stanford into a bowl game and Gerhart to New York City for the Heisman ceremony.

The American public didn't catch onto his simple brilliance until later in the year but his style was evident to all watching. His ability to run over and drag multiple defenders meshed well with coach Jim Harbaugh's physical approach and gave the Pac-10 a grittier, hard-nosed reputation in 2009. That no-frills approach should serve him well in the businesslike NFL.

Gerhart intrigues not just because of his power but also his unlikely speed as well as the ability to multitask at the highest level having thrived in both football and baseball at an academic powerhouse like Stanford. Yeah, we're gushing, but honestly as much as I love flashy players once in awhile a player like Gerhart comes along and shows just how well football can be played the old fashioned way when done by uniquely skilled players.

I kept waiting for him to fall apart last year, several times in a row topping 100-200 yards. After a few weeks that usually empties the tank but Gerhart just kept producing, and shined against Pac-10 powerhouses Oregon and USC as well as rival California. After seeing that, it was impossible not to believe in his abilities.

Now its the NFL's turn to fall in love.
