Wednesday, the Redskins announced something that seemed merely a formality for the past several weeks. They have officially announced the hiring of Kyle Shanahan as their offensive coordinator. They also announced the hiring of two other offensive coaches -- Matt LaFleur as quarterbacks coach and Jon Embree as tight ends coach. It's true that Kyle is the son of new Redskins head coach and executive vice president Mike Shanahan, but this move doesn't necessarily scream nepotism. Kyle is an extremely qualified candidate for any coaching opening at this point in his career. He has been the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans for the past two seasons where he helped lead one of the NFL's most potent offenses. In both of Shanahan's seasons as coordinator, the Texans established new franchise records in total offense. Under his tutelage, Matt Schaub led the NFL in passing yards and completions, while Andre Johnson has led the NFL in receiving yards for two consecutive seasons.
"It is a thrill to have Kyle onboard." Mike Shanahan said. "Not only because it represents a chance to work with my son, but because it brings to our staff the offensive mind that drove one of the most explosive and productive passing attacks in football the last two years."
Believe it or not, Kyle Shanahan will be working with his father for the first time. He entered the NFL as an offensive quality control coach in 2004 and served there for two years before heading to Houston as the wide receivers coach. He was wide receivers coach for a year, quarterbacks coach for a year and then was promoted to offensive coordinator.
There's plenty of speculation about Jason Campbell's abilities as a quarterback, but Shanahan helped morph Schaub from Michael Vick's backup into a Pro Bowler. LaFleur has been with Kyle Shanahan the past two seasons in Houston and aided him with quarterbacks this past season, so he also deserves a slight bit of credit in Schaub's huge success.
