In his breathtaking baseball career, Albert Pujols has 1,781 hits and 379 home runs. None was more important than his screaming liner the other day, during one of those fan conventions popular in the Midwest because, well, it's cold and there's nothing else to do. Yes, Mark McGwire lied to us for years. Yes, he fessed up to using steroids and, thus, tarnished the Summer of Swat in 1998. Yes, he continues to infuriate purists with lame claims that performance-enhancing drugs didn't enhance his performance.

But Pujols, as he does to pitchers every game, disarmed a media crowd that wanted more specific answers from his former teammate and current batting coach with the Cardinals. "There's 300,000 people that just died in Haiti," Pujols said at a festival in downtown St. Louis, "and you guys just want to concentrate on Mark McGwire. Come on, give me a break."
