The Pistons are available! And I'm not talking about Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton. Well, I suppose I am, because I assume you get Tayshaun and Rip for free if you buy the Pistons franchise. Karen Davidson, who took over the Pistons when her husband, longtime owner Bill Davidson, died last year, told reporters during halftime of Detroit's home win over Boston Wednesday that she is in fact looking for bidders for the franchise.Earlier this week, the Detroit News reported that Davidson has recently asked commissioner David Stern for advice on attracting potential buyers. One rumor is that the Ilitch family, owners of the Red Wings, who desperately need a new arena, could be interested in buying the Pistons and building an NBA/NHL arena in Detroit. The Pistons currently play in the Palace of Auburn Hills, a two-decade old gym an hour out of town renowned for its amenities but aging quickly.
During her confirmation, Davidson downplayed the prospect of the Pistons being purchased by an outside bidder and moved away from Detroit, citing the tough economy and a new reluctance for cities and states to finance sports stadiums. While I'm sure Detroit can still support an NBA franchise to go with its NFL, MLB and NHL teams, don't think for a second there aren't other Clay Bennetts out there. Kansas City has a (mostly) vacant downtown arena begging for an NBA team; as a Sacramento-based Kings fan, trust me, it's a nerve-wracking reality. Anaheim is also interested (with an arena ready for basketball), Las Vegas pops off and on the radar, and Seattle could put together a KeyArena renovation plan at any point. Just because new taxpayer-funded arenas don't sprout up in, say, Detroit doesn't mean they don't sprout up anywhere.
Davidson needs to be careful who she sells the Pistons to, relying on guarantees the team will stay in Detroit rather than assumptions about the national market.
