CLEVELAND -- It was a blast furnace of a game on a chilly winter's night, a hint of June in late January. And we'll remember it for a blurry interlude when LeBron James, to the shock of no one but maybe Kobe Bryant, remained the undisputed Most Valuable Player of the NBA, a title he might not relinquish until the next decade. If you've started to take him for granted, this was an evening of profound LeBron appreciation, a game when he buried the defending champions even after learning that his scoring sidekick will be sidelined as long as six weeks. That would be the precise definition of the award, of course. "MVP! MVP! MVP!'' the worshippers chanted in Quicken Loans Arena, a familiar refrain after James outdueled Bryant and carried the Cavaliers to a 93-87 victory over the Lakers. Afterward, as the aroma of pizza wafted by his locker, LeBron soaked his feet and told us what such moments mean to him and his legacy in sports.
"This is what I live for ... That's what it's all about,'' said James, who scored 12 straight points in crunch time en route to a 37-point performance. "You guys wonder why I wait until the fourth quarter. That's money time, when 85 percent of the games are decided -- or, in our case, 95 percent. A lot of people have been telling me what a fun game that was to watch. Let me tell you: It was fun to play in.''
About then, Shaquille O'Neal emerged from a side door. He paused to admire James. "Hey, King,'' he said.
