Raiders 'Vociferously Deny' Reports on Coaching Interview

Tom CableThree weeks after the end of the 2009 regular season, the Oakland Raiders have still not said whether Tom Cable will be back as head coach in 2010. But they insist that they're not looking for any new head coaches until they've decided whether or not Cable will stay.

Responding to reports in the Carroll County Times and the Baltimore Sun that Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson was in Oakland to interview to become the Raiders' head coach, Raiders senior executive John Herrera vehemently stated that no head-coaching interviews are taking place.

"I would vociferously deny that any head coaching interviews are taking place while (Davis) is still meeting with Tom Cable," Herrera told the Contra Costa Times.

So Jackson is only interviewing to be an assistant, not the head coach -- which is pretty strange, because NFL teams almost always hire the head coach first and then let the head coach hire his assistants. The Raiders, however, are not like other teams. They've already hired former Giants defensive line coach Mike Waufle to serve as an assistant in 2010, and they've declined to renew the contracts of several coaches who were assistants in Oakland in 2009.

So the Raiders are busily working on hiring a staff of assistants. And they'll identify the head coach who will serve as those assistants' boss just as soon as Al Davis feels like it.
