On December 27, all Garrett Hartley had to do was make a 37-yard field goal as time expired to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. He pushed it left and missed, with the Saints eventually losing at home to the hapless Bucs. They did back into the top seed, but it had to leave a bitter taste in Hartley's mouth, in addition to severely shaking the confidence in the kicker by the entire city of New Orleans. Since that time, he had only kicked two very insignificant field goals.Just in case we forgot about it, Fox did us the favor of showing the replay of the aforementioned missed kick immediately before Hartley lined up for a potential Super Bowl clinching 40-yarder. The Vikings called a timeout to ice Hartley.
As he finally lined up for the game-winner, the 23-year-old kicker coolly booted a kick squarely through the uprights. Game over. The Saints are going to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
"I'm just doing my part," said the humble Oklahoma product when asked about the kick after the game.
It's a statement that does pretty well sum up the job of a kicker. If you make the kick, it was simply what you were supposed to do. Your only job is to kick the field goal, after all. If you miss it, you will be lambasted for the rest of your career (just ask Scott Norwood).
So let us take a second to congratulate the kicker for doing his job. Here's to you, Garrett, on a job well done.
