The Pro Bowl is supposed to be the one game each year when the NFL's biggest stars are all on the same field. But it doesn't quite work that way in practice. In fact, here's how ridiculous this year's Pro Bowl rosters have gotten: All three of the quarterbacks from the AFC Pro Bowl roster play in the AFC South. And Peyton Manning is not one of them.
Yes, when Manning's Colts got to the Super Bowl it meant that he couldn't play in the Pro Bowl, which this year is played a week before Super Bowl Sunday. And so Jaguars quarterback David Garrard has been invited to take Manning's place. He'll be joined by Texans quarterback Matt Schaub and Titans quarterback Vince Young -- neither of whom were initially chosen on the Pro Bowl roster, but both of whom made it when other quarterbacks declined invitations, citing injuries.
And AFC quarterback is far from the only position where we're going to see Pro Bowlers who couldn't in any way be considered "stars." Several players around the league had already pulled out prior to the conference championship games, and now that the Colts and Saints are in the Super Bowl, every player on both of those teams is automatically out. A few Vikings will probably pull out, too.
Bottom line: If you watch the Pro Bowl, you're going to see plenty of players who are in no way, shape or form stars. You might even see some guys you've never heard of.
