Xavier Nady's long winter search for a new team and the Chicago Cubs' quest to add some outfield depth came to mutual satisfaction Tuesday. The Cubs and the veteran outfielder have reached an agreement on a one-year deal, pending a physical (as reported by Yahoo's Tim Brown). With Nady coming off of his second Tommy John surgery and playing only seven games in 2009 that physical isn't a given, but as a position player that second TJ is much less of a concern.
The Cubs would appear to be well set at the positions Nady is capable of playing, with Alfonso Soriano in left, Kosuke Fukudome in right, and Derrek Lee at first base, but Nady adds some nice depth and allows them to give any of their streaky outfielders a night off (Marlon Byrd is in center, but Fukudome can fill in there in a pinch), or lets them rest Lee or Fukudome against lefties.
In fact, between injury concerns (Soriano hasn't played more than 120 games since 2007 and Lee was dinged up on several occasions last year) and unreliability (Soriano was terrible last year, Fukudome is inconsistent at best and probably doesn't have enough bat to support a corner position, and Byrd's career OPS+ is almost exactly average) there's a good chance Nady will get to see plenty of playing time in 2009.
With his career .854 OPS against lefties, a big improvement over his .769 against righties, he'll fit nicely in a platoon.
