Andre DawsonThe Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday announced that Andre Dawson -- the only new member elected by the BBWAA this year -- will be wearing an Expos cap on his plaque.

The choice was up for debate because "The Hawk" won his only MVP award as a member of the Cubs.

But Dawson spent his first 11 seasons in Montreal and just six in Chicago (plus two each with Boston and Florida).

"I respect the Hall of Fame's decision to put an Expos logo on my cap, and I understand their responsibility to make sure the logo represents the greatest impact in my career," Dawson said in a statement released by the Hall of Fame. "Cubs fans will always be incredibly important in my heart, and I owe them so much for making my time in Chicago memorable, as did the fans in Montreal, Boston and South Florida, my home. But knowing that I'm on the Hall of Fame team is what's most important, as it is the highest honor I could imagine."

According to the Hall:

The choice of which team logo appears on a player's plaque is the Museum's decision, though the wishes of an inductee are always considered. As the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is a history museum, it is important that the logo be emblematic of where the player made his greatest impact. A player's election to the Hall of Fame, however, is a career achievement. As such, every team for whom he played is listed on the plaque.

The Hall of Fame also announced Wednesday that veterans' committee electee Whitey Herzog will have a Cardinals cap on his plaque, although he also won three division titles with the Royals.

As for Dawson, he hit 225 of his 438 homers with the Expos, and 174 for the Cubs. And 253 of Dawson's 314 steals came for the Expos, before the Montreal turf ruined his knees. Sabermetrically, he had 874 runs created for the Expos and 521 for the Cubs. (He was actually a slightly better player, on average, for the Cubs, according to OPS+: 122 for Montreal and 125 for Chicago.)

Still, the decision seems right. The Expos found and drafted Dawson, developed him, and he became known as a terrific all-around player with Montreal. His MVP and "blank check" contract with Chicago brought him more fame, but he should be identified primarily with the Expos.
