It's a lesson we all have to learn: All good things must come to an end. Hardliners hoping that Gilbert Arenas's indefinite ban hinted at a lifetime one will be saddened to hear that the embattled Wizards guard will meet with David Stern today to determine the exact length of his (remaining) suspension. Stern threw the book at Arenas before the legal system had had a chance to sort through things, which isn't usually the way these things work. But now that Arenas has a plea and likely sentence, we're back in more familiar territory. From ESPN.com:
Arenas -- just as teammate Javaris Crittenton did Tuesday -- is meeting with Stern in what is regarded as the final step before the league announces a finite length to Arenas' indefinite suspension. Arenas is expected to be accompanied by his legal team and NBA Players Association chief Billy Hunter. When Stern first made the decision to suspend Gil, and the once-lovable Wizard's name was being dragged through the mud, Arenas expressed interest in getting an audience with the Commish so he could put things in perspective. Who knows if the "it's me, Gilbert" angle will be a factor here; most likely, it'll be a chance for Hunter and Gil's lawyers to make sure the final figure doesn't smack of hysteria.
One source told ESPN.com that the meeting is scheduled for noon ET and that Arenas' suspension details could be announced as early as Wednesday afternoon since he has already met with league investigators.
Then again, initial shock and awe followed by moderation has always been Stern's way of dealing with public relations disasters.
