John Daly had lap-band surgery last February and in that time he's dropped more than 100 pounds. He maxed out at 307 -- mostly due to his insatiable appetite for buffalo wings, beer and Diet Coke (and he would've been chubbier if not for all cigarettes that doubled as diet suppressants) -- but is currently down to 195. Daly had the procedure as part of his recommitment to golf; the former two-time major winner lost his playing card in 2006 and was suspended for six months last season after some off-course issues became too much for PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem to ignore.
Now, some 11 months and 120 pounds later, Daly's still working on his game. The difference: he's serious about getting better, and more importantly, he genuinely seems happy. And one of the unintended consequences of having his stomach reduced to the size of a grape? He can't spend most of his day chugging beer.
Via the San Diego Union Tribune:
"Can't [drink beer] because of the Lap-Band," Daly said. "But I do take a few sips of whiskey now and then." ...The other benefit to J.D.'s newfound svelte-ness? He looks fabulous in a sports coat.
Daly, who made the phrase "Grip it and rip it," famous on the tour, said he has his own brand of tequila and salsa in the works.
"Grip It and Sip It," he said of the tequila. And the salsa? "Grip It and Dip It."
