Brett Favre's will-he or won't-he decision will likely eat up almost all of the attention about the Vikings offseason this year, but there are some other issues for the Vikings to address. Most importantly, the Vikings are in need of some cornerbacks. Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, was either sidelined or limited for most of second half of the season. His replacement, Benny Sapp, is an unrestricted free agent, and Cedric Griffin, the other starting corner, blew his knee out in the NFC Championship loss.
Griffin's injury is the big problem. If he was healthy, Minnesota could run the risk of letting Sapp try the market. Asher Allen, the team's third-round pick in 2009, could compete for the nickel back job and the Vikings could roll the dice on Winfield coming back strong from his foot injury.
But with Griffin looking at a long rehab, Minnesota seems to thin at the position to let Sapp go. Even if Winfield makes a full recovery, Minnesota needs to start planning for his replacement--he's 32 in a league where 30 is old. At this point it would seem to make the most sense to make a push to re-up Sapp. Cornerbacks who can step in and start are hard to find on the free agent market and almost always extremely expensive. If the Vikings can re-sign Sapp before he hits free agency, they have a backup plan in case Winfield is re-injured or if Griffin's recovery sidelines him for part of 2010.
The Vikings also have Asher Allen, last year's third-round draft pick. He could end up beating out Sapp or Griffin eventually, but at this point it's asking a lot to depend on him to step in and start.
