For those of you who watch the Super Bowl for everything but the actual football, some news: the NFL and CBS announced yesterday that, as part of the pregame festivities, Carrie Underwood will sing the National Anthem and Queen Latifah will sing "America the Beautiful." Underwood, you may recall, once dated Tony Romo (She's now engaged to Ottawa Senators Mike Fisher), but since the Cowboys have two postseason wins since 1996, there wasn't much chance the two would run into each other this week in Miami. Awkwardness avoided. (And to those of you who had one of Romo's ladyfriends making it to the Super Bowl before he did, congratulations.)
According to the press release, "Underwood is among many great performers who have been honored with singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl." Like: Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, ... Dixie Chicks, Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson and many more."
In case you're wondering what constitutes "and many more," here's a sampling: Super Bowl I -- Universities of Arizona and Michigan bands. Super Bowl XIII -- Colgate University Thirteen (it's their lucky number!). And perhaps the most obscure name on the list, from Super Bowl XXIX -- Kathy Lee Gifford.
