Knuckle Puck: Alex Ovechkin's Sick Whips

Each and every weekend this season I'll be taking a look at the random happenings and absurdities that occur in the world of hockey. Feel free to suggest stories, complain or otherwise babble at me via electronic mail.

If your contract paid you $124 million over the 13 years, you'd probably have a lot of extra money to play around with. As it turns out, those are the terms of the contract extension that Alex Ovechkin signed in January 2008. Naturally, the guy who loves to fly around on the ice likes to fly around on the streets as well. Ovechkin has quite a car collection, photos of which made the rounds on the internet this week.

Over at Jalopink, a Gawker blog that covers anything and everything about cars, they found pictures of two of AO's cars this week. One is a white Mercedes S Class with a license plate that reads "AAA8AAA." I have no idea what that means -- although '8' is his jersey number -- except maybe that's the sound Ovechkin makes every time he skates full throttle at the net on a breakaway.

One of Ovechkin's other cars is a Mercedes SL65 AMG Black series with a plate that reads "AO GR8". That makes a bit more sense and is, as the kids would say, a sick whip. But the real question, I think, is has he ever taken it out for a good ol' fashioned ghost ride? Now that would be YouTube gold! Gold I tell you!

All ghost riding aside, I think Alexander the Great needs some help with a more creative license plate strategy. To help, I've come up with a list of possible alternative plates for him. Feel free to add your own in the comments. I know I went past the character limit on a few of these, but that's because I was trying to convey the entire message. Don't you just hate it when you pass someone on the road with a custom plate and have no clue what it means? I do, anyway.

Knuckle Pucker of the Year Nominee and YouTube of the Week
Each week, we'll nominate someone who deserves to be recognized for their outstanding service and commitment to giving me something to write about. By the end of the year I'll come up with some way to declare a winner. Today's nominees are...

... these guys! Outside the opposing team's penalty box in Vancouver a pair of green people have taken up residence. This video is from all the way back on December 22nd, but it still deserves recognition.
