The Internet was set ablaze on Monday afternoon with rumors that the Minnesota Twins had come to a preliminary agreement on a 10-year contract extension with Joe Mauer, but like a lot of things in life, just because you read it on the Internet doesn't make it true.A major league source told FanHouse's Ed Price that the club is "pecking away" at an extension, and the feeling within the organization is that a deal will get done eventually, "but [it] will be a battle."
However, any reports of a preliminary agreement are premature.
While no deal has been struck between Mauer and the Twins, that doesn't mean both sides aren't optimistic that something will get done soon.
Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune wrote over the weekend that multiple sources he talked to at TwinsFest believe that a deal will be done in the near future, and even went on the record saying he thinks so as well.
Mauer re-emphasized on Friday that he does not want his contract status to become a distraction for himself or the Twins this season, so there is plenty of reason for both sides to get things done. It's rather obvious that Mauer's first choice is, and always has been, to stay in Minnesota.
He grew up in the Twin Cities, and he wants to stay there. Which is a very good thing for the Twins and for Major League Baseball in general, as there aren't many players who mean as much to their franchise as Mauer does to the Twins.
