Spurs Make Way for the Rodeo

Another year, another February away from home for the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs' so-called "Rodeo Trip" -- the annual eviction from the AT&T Center due to the ever-important San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo -- begins Wednesday in Sacramento. The Spurs won't play at home again until Feb. 24, with All-Star Weekend (in which Tim Duncan and DeJuan Blair will participate) breaking up the eight-game trip.

San Antonio has historically done very well on the Rodeo Trip, which isn't surprising considering the annual trip began in earnest in 2003, and considering the Spurs have been incredible just about every year since 1999. In that virgin long voyage in 2003, the Spurs went 8-1, and set a record for most consecutive wins in a single road trip (eight). The team hasn't been that successful in recent years, but the trip still provides a nice jumping off point for the stretch run of the regular season.

Here's how the last seven years of Rodeo Trips have played out for the Spurs.

On the one hand, the trend is clear: the Spurs we see today don't dominate like the ones of 2003, 2004 or 2005. But on the bright side, San Antonio went 4-4 in 2007, and still won the title.

This season, it's a mixed bag on the road: the Kings, Pacers, Sixers and Pistons shouldn't be too rough for the Spurs. But the Blazers, Lakers and Nuggets await, and the Clippers could be a tough out. The Spurs are actually 3-0 all-time against the Lakers on the Rodeo Trip, last winning in OT to start the 2007 voyage.
