Dolphins Fans Wish Drew Brees Could Be Theirs

Drew BreesMIAMI -- Drew Brees is here in Miami this week because he led the New Orleans Saints to the Super Bowl. But a lot of Dolphins fans are wondering whether if it would be their team in the Super Bowl had the Dolphins signed Brees in 2006, when he was a free agent who visited Miami and said he'd love to play here.

As it turned out, then-Dolphins head coach Nick Saban, following the advice of team doctors who questioned the health of Brees' shoulder, chose to sign Daunte Culpepper as the team's starting quarterback.

How much do the folks in Miami regret that decision? So much that longtime Miami Herald columnist Greg Cote wrote this week that signing Culpepper instead of Brees ranks as one of the four most significant decisions in franchise history. (The other three were the founding of the franchise in 1965, the hiring of coach Don Shula in 1970 and the drafting of quarterback Dan Marino in 1983.)

Calling it one of the four biggest decisions in franchise history might be an overstatement, but I've talked to some fans in Miami this week who still seem furious, four years later, that Brees is leading the Saints -- not the Dolphins -- to the Super Bowl. Franchise quarterbacks don't become available very often, and Miami fans still regret that when Brees visited Miami in 2006, he left without a contract.

For his part, Brees didn't seem to want to talk much about the Dolphins this week, saying only that it's "pretty crazy the way things work out" and "kind of interesting I guess" that he's a Saint instead of a Dolphin. Brees has praised the Saints for believing in him when neither the Dolphins nor his former team, the Chargers, did.

But here in Miami, there are still a lot of fans upset that Brees isn't a Dolphin.
