A week after suspending U.S. sales of eight car and truck models because of sticky accelerator pedals, the automaker acknowledged brake problems in the Prius, its popular gas-electric hybrid. And U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told owners of recalled Toyotas to stop driving them until they were fixed. He backtracked hours later, saying he had made a misstatement, but his actions were a major blow to Toyota's stock price.
The gas pedal problem prompted Toyota to recall 4.3 million vehicles late last year and another 2.3 million last month. Of course, Toyota isn't the first automaker to confront a quality crisis -- and its recall isn't even the biggest.
