Jerry RiceFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Dick LeBeau, Floyd Little and John Randle were selected Saturday as the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2010.

Smith and Rice were shoo-ins who, according to sources on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, were barely even discussed during Saturday's Hall of Fame selection meeting. Grimm was a member of the famous Washington Redskins offensive line known as The Hogs. Jackson was a New Orleans Saints linebacker who, fittingly, is selected the same weekend that the Saints are playing in their first Super Bowl. Randle was a great defensive tackle for the Vikings.

LeBeau and Little were the two seniors candidates. Although LeBeau will be enshrined for his tenure as a player with the Detroit Lions, his candidacy was watched closely by Steelers fans, who were hoping that the team's longtime defensive guru would get in. The enshrinement of Little, a running back for the Broncos, will come as welcome news for the fans of Denver, who have long believed their team has been shortchanged in Hall of Fame voting.

The 15 modern-era candidates were discussed, and after a vote five were eliminated: Raiders receiver Tim Brown, Eagles and Vikings receiver Cris Carter, 49ers and Cowboys linebacker Charles Haley, Cardinals and Chargers coach Don Coryell and 49ers running back Roger Craig.

After those five were eliminated, the 10 remaining candidates were discussed, and five more were eliminated: Steelers center Dermontti Dawson, Bears defensive end Richard Dent, Seahawks defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, Bills receiver Andre Reed and Broncos and Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe.

At that point, an up-or-down vote was taken separately on the remaining five candidates, and all five made it. Voting on the two senior candidates is done separately, and both seniors candidates made it as well. With seven members, the 2010 enshrinement class will be bigger than any since the Class of 2001, which also had seven. And with Rice and Smith leading the way, the Class of 2010 will also be one of the best.
