The Terrapin men's basketball team returned to the Comcast Center on Friday afternoon, following a road win against Florida State. Gary Williams still hasn't left. The Terps' coach slept in his office to avoid being snowed out of the arena for Sunday's game against North Carolina. Given the white doom that befell the Washington metro area, it was a smart choice.
So much snow fell that Maryland encouraged fans to stay home if they live beyond walking distance. The athletic department also eschewed the standard student ticket system, instead admitting any person with a valid student ID.
Despite the weather, the Tar Heels made it into the arena for a practice Saturday.
"We got the Comcast Center all to ourselves except for Gary (Williams) who I hear is sleeping here," North Carolina spokesman Steve Kirschner told the The Baltimore Sun.
And so Gary's legend grows. But it's hard to say that he was roughing it.
Williams' office is suitable to live in, according to those at my colleagues at The Diamondback -- Maryland's student newspaper -- who have been inside.
Whatever the conditions, Gary can't be too upset with a 92-71 win against the defending, albeit struggling, national champs.
