Great news for fans of pugilism, kangaroo advocates and Australiaphiles: the International Olympic Committee has relented and the Australian Olympic team's most recognizable symbol -- a golden kangaroo with big red boxing gloves -- can continue to hang just outside the Olympic Athletes' Village in Vancouver, site of the Winter Games.

Via NBCOlympics.com:

Last week, when the flag first appeared on the side of the building, an IOC official raised questions of potential trademark infringement. The Australian Olympic Committee refused to take it down. On Sunday, IOC officials changed their minds.

"Every Australian athlete that has arrived in the Vancouver Olympic Village has been thrilled to see [the kangaroo] flying high."

And it's not just the Aussies; according to team Chef De Mission* Ian Chesterman, "... Athletes from all around the world have been lining up to have their photo taken outside the Australian team headquarters."

When it's all said and done, this could turn out to be the highlight of the Australians' trip to Vancouver. Hey, it could be worse.

* I had to look it up: Chesterman isn't a master chef, he's the head of the Australian delegation.
