No Extensions for Jeter, Rivera or Girardi

The New York Yankees are coming off a season in which they won 103 games in the regular season, and capped it off with the 27th World Series title in franchise history. Normally that's a recipe that leads to a whole lot of contract extensions, and with three key components like Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Joe Girardi all in the final year of their contracts, you'd expect all three to sign new deals shortly.

They won't be.

According to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, all three will have to play out the final year of their deal before the team sits down to talk.
"I don't think you can separate one from the other," Cashman explained. "I am not saying they are the same, but the questions will come, 'If you did one, why didn't you do the other?' If this was Kansas City, it would be different - but it's not."
None of this comes as a surprise. Hal Steinbrenner told FanHouse's Ed Price the same thing back in December.

"I don't do extensions," said Steinbrenner then. "It's a policy I have, one I've always had."

You wouldn't think that this would serve as a distraction for any of the three this season, either. For Girardi, it doesn't matter what kind of contract he has, the minute the Yankees go on a five-game losing streak fans in New York will call for his head. It's just the nature of the beast.

As for Rivera and Jeter, they're two Yankee legends. Once the season is over, they'll get their new deals. It's just not feasible to think that the Yankees would want either player to finish their career anywhere else, and the players probably feel the same way.
