The study, which focused on drug use among 20,000 people age 50 and older, found that 4.3 million people admitted using illicit drugs from 2006 to 2008.That translates to 4.7 percent of that age group. In 2002, that number stood at 2.7 percent.
The findings have major implications for the health care system, with experts expecting a huge increase in the demand for substance abuse treatment for the baby boom generation.
What kinds of drugs are the boomers using? They fall into three categories: pot, prescription-type drugs taken for non-medical purposes, and all other types of illicit substances. Some of the people in the study reported using more than one type of drug. The chart below lays it out.
