February is the month for fantasy competitors to find flaws in the stock of each player. When someone has surgery, that knocks their draft stock down until they hit the field. That is what's likely to happen to Cliff Lee's draft position after news of a minor foot surgery. But the Mariners aren't worried about the injury, and you shouldn't be either.
Timetables currently put Lee back in 2-3 weeks, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him miss a few more. The team will try to balance getting Lee ready by Opening Day with limiting the amount of spring-training innings he pitches after last year's heavy workload. Should he miss that 2-3 week goal, fantasy owners will start to panic and Lee will begin to free-fall down your draft boards. That's good news for you.
Whatever magic Lee captured in 2008, it continued into 2009. The pitcher Lee is now looks nothing like the one before that 2008 breakout, and a minor foot surgery isn't going to change his production on the field. He wasn't affected by a foot injury at the end of last season, which makes this situation pretty minor in all likelihood. But the uncertainty surrounding his health is likely to shy potential owners away, meaning you may be able to get Lee at a No. 3 SP price by the time you draft. If you should be so lucky, rejoice!
Larry Stone of the Seattle Times spoke with Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik after the procedure and confirmed the lack of apprehension toward the surgery. We will likely forget all about this by May, so if you have a chance to get Lee at a discount now, do so.
