(Feb. 10) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry wants the military to send one of its drones to help patrol the U.S.-Mexican border, reports The Dallas Morning News.

Perry, who is running for re-election, blasted the federal government for its failure to secure the borders and prevent illegal immigrants from entering the U.S. He said the Predator unmanned aerial vehicle could help by providing real-time video.

"Why not fly them from Brownsville to El Paso?" Perry asked, according to the Dallas newspaper.

In fact, Customs and Border Protection already operates five Predators to patrol the northern border with Canada and the southern border with Mexico. Three are based in Arizona and two in North Dakota.

In December, CBP announced plans for its first maritime Predator, which will be used to patrol sea routes and will be based in Florida. The agency expects to add another maritime Predator this year, based in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The Predator is perhaps best known for its military role in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where it has been used for surveillance and air strikes. The Predators flown by CBP are unarmed.

A Predator costs about $10 million.
