Mike Krzyzewski and John Calipari are now "rumored candidates" for the New Jersey Nets head coaching position, a job for which no official coaching search has even begun (making their candidacy somewhat tepid). The K rumors started out of North Jersey's Bergen Record, where a source is cited as saying that "[Krzyzewski is] the Nets' first choice." This was picked up by the New York Daily News who provided a source willing to throw Cal's name in the ring as well, stating that he's "on the team's radar."
Now, again, "candidacy" is the key word here, along with the phrase "wish list" -- the Nets can hope to land whoever they want to coach this team, but the only real logic fueling either K or Cal to the team is the possibility that some combination of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will end up playing ball in Brooklyn.
If that happens (and it could, but again, it's going to take some impressive negotiating) then maybe the talk of K leaving a lifetime contract and deity-like status in Durham for a chance to ruin his coaching legacy by failing in the L, or of Calipari walking away from what currently looks like the best college program in the country (and one that doesn't show any signs of dropping off with his ability to draw in one-and-done's).
The one factor -- even more than how the team is built -- that could change K's mind and sway him out of Durham, though, is the increased possibility that Jerry Colangelo (who K is close with from their USA Basketball days) could be lured to New Jersey to replace Rod Thorn, whose contract is up and, because of his situation, hasn't even begun a coaching search.
But if the situation in Jersey isn't insanely cushy to come into, don't expect to see either one of these guys considered legitimate candidates. And even if it is, there's no lock the Nets could lure either guy away from their current gig.
